Our most recent live event for schools, Defend Stirling Castle proved a hit and we’re delighted with the response from pupils and teachers.
Over 2,000 learners took part in our livestreamed online lessons on 13 March 2025 combining cyber security, and Scotland’s rich heritage.
From murder holes to firewalls, participants learned how one of Scotland’s most important historical sites, Stirling Castle, was protected from intruders, and how modern cyber security mirrors many of these medieval techniques.
Kirsten Wood from Stirling Castle joined regular hosts Daniel Devine and Craig Steele to answer questions from the learners.
This interactive event mixed online gaming, digital skills, and interactive storytelling, all centred around Scotland’s rich history and historic environment.
The event was supported by Historic Environment Scotland, and funded by the Scottish Connections Fund.
We’re delighted to have been awarded a grant from the Scottish Connections Fund that allowed us to offer this event to groups around the world.
For a long time we’ve seen teachers around the world find and use our resources. It was great to be able to offer an event aimed at them in a timezone that suits their learners.
Daniel Devine, Digital Skills Education
The participation of international groups improves the experience for Scottish learners, they tell us it makes them feel special, and part of something bigger.
Groups around the world use our resources, and we would like to reach more.
We hope to see many of the international groups engaged again, and introduce other schools in their network to future events.
Online live lessons are a great way to engage large numbers of pupils and form connections between learners around the world.
We complement the core curriculum by taking topics learners are familiar with, and apply them in fun and unexpected ways.
In this event we took cyber security, a topic teachers are keen to introduce to learners, and blend it with medieval history and castle defence.
It’s all about building bridges between curriculum areas and offering a memorable experience with ‘something for everyone’.
We’ve got a bank of lessons that we can run on-demand, or can develop new ones.
