Craig and Daniel presented “Can you code a fair and unbiased algorithm?“ – a hands-on workshop at the Scottish AI Summit.
At the event, hosted at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh, conference attendees learned about the importance of ethics, and got hands-on with Python code to design an algorithm.
Could they be fair? Or did their design decisions (accidentally) disadvantage some people?
We need to prepare the next generation of digital leaders to understand the dangers of biased algorithms and AI. To fight that inequality, they need to know how to spot them, and how to tackle them.

Hands-On learning experience
The interactive lesson explored how personal data is used to make decisions. Participants saw how computer programmers can (often accidentally) implement their own bias into the algorithms, AI, and apps they create. The workshop was set up to be engaging and easy to follow, with no need for any technical background.
Getting to grips with how biases can sneak into algorithms is crucial for building fair AI systems. Today, we’re not just learning how to code; we are learning how to code responsibly.
