Kirstie, Kieran, and Craig visited libraries in Carnegie, Prestwick, Maybole and Troon to help the community stay connected, learn about AI, and how to stay safe online.
Our free digital skills sessions were part of “ Stay Connected” a programme run by South Ayrshire Libraries and funded by the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC).
We ran three sessions focusing on staying safe online. With the recent high-street hacks fresh in people’s minds, we shared information on what they could do to stay protected against scammers. The attendees left feeling more confident about spotting scams and learned how to use stronger passwords to protect their accounts.
In our other sessions, we ran our ‘Introduction to ChatGPT and AI Apps’ workshop which proved to be a very popular topic.
We spoke about how AI tools like ChatGPT can be used in everyday life. We demonstrated some examples and explained the good and not so good parts of using these apps. It turned out to be one of our most popular sessions, with lively discussions and plenty of curiosity. Many of the participants were surprised and excited by the potential of AI apps to help with writing tasks, or for coming up with ideas. Some participants have already been in touch to say they’re now confidently using ChatGPT at home!
Of course, you can’t visit South Ayrshire without visiting the beaches. We were lucky with the weather at Ayr Beach – but not so much in Troon, where Kieran and I got soaked!
Thanks again to South Ayrshire Libraries and SLIC for supporting this initiative to improve digital literacy and AI understanding in local communities.
